In days gone by, a group of loyal, passionate and vocal supporters gathered in the Stand on match days and enjoyed their rugby together. At the last home match of the year, they would bring mince pies and other Christmas delicacies to share, washed down with a few whiskies and brandies – to keep them warm, of course!
Rumour has it that on one such gathering, Bill Wharram, looked up and commented that they looked like a “bunch of Muppets”. This tickled the group. Perhaps they misheard, but the gang has since been referred to as the Muffits.
The gang of supporters moved into the Clubhouse for their Christmas lunch, providing and serving all the food themselves and took the opportunity to fundraise for the Club.
The tradition has gone by the wayside over the last few years but with the help of Phil & Heidi Redfearn and Doug Skelton, the Muffits Lunch is to be revived and we invite all Club supporters – whether you sit in the Stand, or not – to join us on Saturday 14th December for this warmly remembered event and where we can reminisce about our past Muffit friends. To name a few: Joe “you’ve made an old man very happy” D’Arcy; Jimmy Moore; Chris Guthrie; Stephen Ward; George Woodall; John Hepworth; Eric Wood; Tony Redfearn.
Tickets will be limited as we have a busy Saturday when we welcome a full contingency from Cleckheaton, but the Swan’s Nest is available for a group of friends or family to enjoy lunch and the match from the balcony. Email comms@selbyrufc.com for more details.
Tickets include match day entry, 2 course lunch and glass of wine. If you are able, please bring a prize for the raffle of the day.
