The younger section of Selby’s Colts took on a Pocklington team reduced to fifteen by injury in an all U17 encounter.

Typically these days, it was raining sidewards prior to kick-off and for the first part of this derby match. Unperturbed, Selby started strongly with the forwards absorbing some strong Pocklington pressure and forced the visitors back to their 22. With a surge forward and a series of recycled ball a pass to Cresh on the wing saw him touch the ball down in the corner after only 3 mins, unconverted.

At the restart Selby put the pressure on immediately an after four phases Tehan popped the ball up to Howarth for a strong try next to the post, this one handsomely converted by half-back Kealey.

Some Pocklington injuries led to a number of Selby lads stepping up to keep the game going and playing in blue and white strips, Ellam at No 8 made strong advance only to meet Kierans who pointed out the clearing sky to Ellam from the seat of his pants.

Selby’s dominance showed again with a run-in from the halfway line by Sibley with another conversion by Keeley.

Going into the break, Selby encountered the first of 3 yellow cards that straddled each half. Undeterred the green, red and gold kicked on with another solo effort moving forward from Sibley and after another strong ruck the ball entered the hands of the hirsute Cresh for another this time in the opposite corner.

24-0 the home team gathered for a halftime huddle.

With only 14 players on the field, Pocklington had the opportunity to carry the ball at the wing early after the break until they met some muscular tackling from Nycek who again and again brought down allcomers.

Selby were further stretched with another player adjudged to have made an infringement allowing Pocklington, who by now had several Selby players performing cameos, to score another with a conversion.

With an almost immediate response with a decisive pass from Moffat to Kuba Nycek scoring joyously with what can only be describe as a hairy swan dive for his third, this time– converted by Keeley.

Final score 31-17 to the swans

Coach Stoker was full of praise for team and particularly Luke Fairfield at number 9 for swift decision making, accurate passes and aggressive turnovers.
